Wow...I didn't expect this announcement to be so early in the month. So what is left for the MacWorld?

Probably the touch screen video Ipod for starters.

I was really thinking about an iMac, but I'm considering a Sony Vaio laptop with an IPS monitor from a 3rd party. I'll definitely wait to see what Apple comes out with this week, though.

Whenever anyone posts on here that they're thinking of going Windows, a lot of people either shout TROLL! or say: fine, goodbye.

I still feel like it's a shame to leave Macs behind. Still, again I have to say that Windows 7 offers a lot more to the Mac-learned creative community than any other version from Microsoft.**

**Other than maybe Windows 2000 pro in its heyday... nice solid system that got out of your way.

Really? I have Windows 7 on desktop and find it to be the same crap as Vista but with a new theme pack. Other than the slightly different appearance it seams essentially exactly the same (ie the worst Windows since M.E.).

Anyone knows if the mac pro allows us to upgrade to PCI graphics cards bought from retail stores? Will there be any driver issues? Do graphics card vendors include Mac drivers on their installation disc? Never seen one that does though..

If you look at the picture of the iPhone poster, it seems to have a couple of subtle differences compared to my iPhone:
    http://images.appleinsider.com/macworld-banner-7.jpg

    1) The white etching on the home button seems rounder than current iPhones
    http://www.codefarm.co.uk/userpics/button.jpg

    2) The In Call screen is different, and is that a desktop above the call status? Looks like some file icons there
    http://www.codefarm.co.uk/userpics/files.jpg

    3) Look very, very carefully at the top left hand corner: Is there a front facing camera hidden amongst the reflections?
    http://www.codefarm.co.uk/userpics/camera.jpg http://www.codefarm.co.uk/userpics/camera2.jpg

Maybe I'm just suffering from pre macworld hallucinations, but that certainly looks different to my iPhone...

This is exactly what many said in response to the article yesterday. Delay three months to get support for next gen networks (and who knows, maybe unify the ATT and verizon hardware). Despite all the hand wringing, it's hard to imagine many happy iPhone users would defect over a three month delay.

Much better to get new features three months later than ship in summer without them and have to wait a whole extra year for them.

I'd say that Verizon maybe blocking the update because they want to make sure that all hell doesn't break loose once it is released. It would be interesting to see what the justification is, maybe 5.0 will be the 'big change' for iOS on AT&T and Verizon phones? It'd be ironic if it's really Verizon that's iOS blocking. Or it's simply not worth Apple's effort to support only a miniscule number of customers with a minor upgrade.

yes, what's up with 666 MB... :(It's just a set of repeating numbers. Personally, I think it's awesome; if it was deliberate, it's a great indicator of their humor.

Well, yes and no. The title of the page reads 'Core 2 Duo'. The page also states it's available to pre order, with a release date of the 13th.

Sure, but it has obviously nothing to do with the specs of the new macbook.

People don't care about Flash Player itself, they just want the ability to play video in the browser, which the iPhone is perfectly capable of doing. So instead of lobbying Apple for Flash support we should be lobbying web developers for video tag support.

Developers aren't the problem. A lot of it is Internet Explorer and Microsoft not supporting standards. For one, IE doesn't do much html5. Microsoft will probably never support the svg-based "flash killer" canvas tag. Also, due to bickering on all browser makers, HTML5 doesn't specify a mandatory video format so you have Apple doing mpeg-4, Firefox and friends doing ogg, and IE supporting nothing. And let's not forget users who still run IE6.

Out of the box, most Windows machines don't know how to play MP4 files (unless a user has QuickTime) but most do play flash content. Mac OS X won't play ogg out of the box. So you're left with Flash. As a web developer, Flash is the easiest way to get multimedia, especially video, on your website and looking the same in all browsers. Unless you run a predominately Mac OS X website, HTML5 just isn't ready for prime time yet.

And of course - Apple will be teh first OS manufacturer to ship OTA updates "in volumes". (Android OTAs are 60-70 Em Bees - iOS being superior ships 300+ Em Bees!)

Apple, you greedy apple give us flash even if you allow a way to click and hold that Lego piece to save a URL fir later viewing in a app specific flash player

Cydia is your friend. Of course Mobile Safari doesn't (officially) support file downloads so regardless you're still SOL unless you predownload and transfer your FLV/SWF files.

Buyer satisfaction with other Apple products is clearly filtering down into Mac sales. This trend will only continue to strengthen.

Old timer here, I still have a first gen iPod. The kind with a mechanical jog wheel...

What you're all forgetting is that, before the iPod, MP3 players were either the size of a Diskman (remember those), or only held 16 songs. The iPod was entering a market that didn't exist, and it was also the first iProduct Apple Computer Inc released. Nobody expected it, nobody cared about it.

You still see the same attitude on these boards, when someone says "I don't care about the iPad 2, I just want my Core i7 MBP!" There's no difference, except now we've seen that iProducts do sell, and don't laugh them off so easily...

You can't tell me you wouldn't laugh and make the same sort of comments if Apple released a clothing line. ;)

if the clothesline held 5000 pieces of clothes, put them up for me, dried them quickly, and then folded them in baskets? I wouldn't laugh.

Your point about hindsight is well taken but some of us didn't pay attention to the nay sayers then, and still don't. I bought gen 1 iPod as well, and loved it. And the point those old comments make clear, as more than one person pointed out, people will always naysay the new... and still do today. Except today they go to extremes to find flaws as well and insist 'fail'

    Bah

Apple always does that, yet people still buy the next ver of their hardware. If people stopped buying into their games of incremental fragmented releases, Apple would quit doing it.

Please show me a company that doesn't do that. You know that there is a lot more technology out there then what is on the market right?

NEWSFLASH: The iPod Nano and Blackbook are exactly the same. This banner contains nothing new. You guys are seeing things.

You're right, after I look closely at this image. Dunno how it seemed so clearly brushed metal to me before.

once ipad is launched, millions will buy or check it out online. At the same time, if apple has updated the pros and airs, consumers may also choose to purchase them online.

Apple wants to attract new customers all the time, it will be disappointing to see the line of mac products along with their price if nothing is updated before the ipad launch.

makes perfect sense to update before ipad, that's what I think

Hmmm...... If you look closely at the banner photo you'll see the "64-bit" logo is awfully close to the photo of the iMac. The current Intel iMacs are not 64-bit since the Core Duo (1) processers are 32-bit. Could this mean that the iMacs are going to get the new Core Duo 2 processers, which just happen to be 64-bit.

Same goes for the MacBook Pros

I doubt it since this is the World Wide DEVELOPERS Conference...I wouldnt classify an imac as a developmental machine.

I tried Rapidweaver, but it wasn't for me the template system seemed to get in the way when I tried it. I do a lot of CSS coding and work a lot with Wordpress. I can used other programs to write code for Wordpress, Espresso works well and I use CSSEdit for working exclusively with CSS, but there are times I want a good WYSIWYG editor for laying out pages quickly and not have to switch between a preview and code view. So far KomPozer is the one that is the closest, but it is buggy and unfinished, I always find myself going back to Dreamweaver and wishing for something else.

Actually i was going to mention Wordpress, but I don't use it, so...
If you are seasoned and comfortable to work in CSS, RW is probably not for you either.

The template part is what I actually love. They are malleable, and you can make your own. Coming from a magazine design background it just seemed very analogous to how I always worked and thought in print work...

Not sure if it's been mentionned, but will this thing be PDF compatible? Or if it's a special format, will OS X have an update to add "print/export" capability for it or will iTunes simply be able to import a lot of different formats and convert for the iPod?

As for GPS/maps, well, I'd have no choice but to buy this new iPod if it had that feature, especially if it also had speech capabilities ("turn right at next stop", etc).

I'd like to point out the reason it is being released at WWDC. It has a form of widgets and internet connectivity options. It will be a whole new platform for developers to release apps. I was told this 6 months ago, by somebody who has always given me Apple rumors correctly.

I also expect the new iPod, if it's touch-screen and the whole surface is a widescreen display, to have custom apps/games and a new special version of Xcode to develop iPod apps/games. Maybe even the possibility to add your apps/games to iTMS (iTunes Media Store, obviously).

And while we're at it, put Wi-Fi and Safari on it. :D

This has been a problem ever since the App Store appeared to; on the Mac one is told to re-download a 4GB application for a few piddly updates in much the same way one is forced to re-download the whole operating system. I do wonder what their rational actually is - when they recompile the whole operating system they're unable to create a piecemeal patch (difference between the new version and old version)? That when they update one thing there is an ABI change that requires the whole thing to be re-installed?

Maybe they haven't written the "Optimizing" app that links all the little pieces of the OS together. Maybe it is too much trouble for such a small device.

Is that the verdict on the screw issue?

Yes, it is. The screw has always been there. I will say that ours is no longer flush like it was at first. Brushing your hand over it means you feel the screw whereas in May we could not. So, the screw may be more noticeable if this is true for others, as well. I could see it being very annoying for some.
