Band of Brothers: Bastogne

So... this is a drunk post... yeah.... I went out and had a good ol' night with the law school crew. While finals are not done, I have completed to majority of my work for finals. I've taken two of them, with only evidence to go. Evidence is going to be a pain in the ass, being taught by Parker and all. The fact that it is taught by Parker is mitigated by another fact, the fact that I have already pretty much finished my evidence outline. Now, for those of you not in law school, with open-note/book finals, outlines can be a lifesaver. I was an idiot and finished my outline for my LAST final first... how dumb is that?? Yeah I know.. Well, anyways, I'm wearing a Santa Clause hat right now... ya know, the red hat with the white furry ball connected to the top. I never understood where this came from.

Band of Brothers (2001)

Oh, so yeah, the point of this post. I went out drinkin' with the law school crew. And it is freggin' COLD!!! Seriously. Before Thanksgiving it was almost normal temperature outside. Now it is like super negative cold outside. So it got me to thinkin', "how awesome was that TV series Band of Brothers???" Particularly it made me think of the Bastogne/Battle of the Bulge episode (Episode 6).

Band of Brothers: Bastogne. Painting.

So right now I'm watching that exact episode, because I have the good fortune of owning Band of Brothers on DVD. And on that topic, it is making me feel old as helllllll. Band of Brothers was released in 2001.... now that's almost 10 years ago!!! What!?!!? It feels like only a couple of years ago... but it's a freggin' decade!!! Wow, what happened!? Oh that's right.. law school makes days seem like minutes, and months feel like hours. It still feels like I just graduated college... Which was technically in Dec. 2008. I need to slow down.

Sincerely, McDaniel Visnewski.

Law School, Oh Law School!

Hello Cruel World!

I felt like posting up a message. It's just a rambling of crap I've been thinking about.

Okay, so! It's about that time of year again... finals! So I've been doin' some outlinin' and some readin' and some grovelin' (well maybe not groveling) ...Actually I've been spending my time doing some very valuable things like playing Call of Duty: Bad Company 2 (which is odd for me because I don't play much video games)...

...and watching important videos on Youtube like this Terminator 2 rap (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdpngMC5TKM&feature=related, i'm listening to it right now whilst I write).

But anyway, yeah, I'm full-swing preparing for finals, and trying to relax as much as possible... which is difficult. Most of my days are just reading and outlining, and writing. I'm doing the Economics journal at Mason, which requires me to write an article. Hopefully it will be published... I have a pretty good chance. I lucked out with a good topic (in addition to my amazing writing ability, of course).

I'm excited for Thanksgiving, which is coming up. The parents are actually coming down here to Arlington for once, which is cool. I haven't seen them in awhile. Also, my brother is over in Afghanistan these days... which sucks.

Me and my brother.
And yes, I realize that there is a lot going on in this picture.
One word to explain: NASCAR.

I sent him some DVDs to watch during thanksgiving time -- the logistics of sending him a turkey didn't add up, haha. I sent him the new movie Predators. It's a pretty badass movie. It has Adrian Brody not playing a pianist. He actually managed to play the role of a badass. I was surprised. The movie was entertaining, certainly not a masterpiece, but there was plenty of shooting and random violence... so cool, I guess, right? I also sent him Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. We both have a particular affinity for the Kevin Smith movies, being from New Jersey and all. I also sent him Joe Dirt. That movie is great. It has that hot chick -- Brandi? -- and it was only $7.99. Win - win... cheap hot chicks. I plan on sending him the Beavis and Butthead Christmas special episodes for Christmas. One of the episodes is a spoof of the classic It's a Wonderful Life, except in this version Butthead ends up not caring that the world is a much better place without him ever being born.

Right now I'm listening to Rilo Kiley's album The Execution of All Things (2002). It's pretty good, check it out. Here is one of the songs off the record -- it's laid back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAcHnNd5Mg8 .

On another note, I found a very gorgeous girl while watching an old(ish) TV show called Dead Like Me (2003-2004). I will probably add her to my personal "most gorgeous chicks in the world list" that's ongoing in my head. Her name is Laura Harris. I wasn't able to find many flattering pictures, surprisingly, but here's one:

Good day!

Sincerely, SkiJump

Johnny Got His Gun

So I watched two movies recently that were pretty freaking crazy.

The first was Johnny Got His Gun. The movie is about a WWI American soldier who has his arms and legs blown off during combat. His face is also destroyed, leaving just a hole. He is hooked up to a respirator and is fed through a tube. The doctors think he is decerebrated (just a vegetable with only motor functions), but he is actually conscious and his brain is perfectly fine. The doctors keep his body alive to do medical tests.

"I don't know whether I'm alive and dreaming or dead and remembering!"

The film focuses on his attempts to communicate with the medical staff and to keep his sanity. He at first can't tell when he is conscious or dreaming. He searches his dreams for help -- to get out of his predicament -- but no one can help him, even Jesus (played by Donald Sutherland). Most of the movie is about the young man trying to get to know his father better, who died just before he left for the war. His girlfriend is also a focus, who ends up leaving him for another man in his dreams. He ends up making contact with the medical staff. But I won't say anything more, in case you ever end up seeing it.

It was probably the most depressing movie I've ever seen... which for some reason are the types of movies I've been enjoying most lately. In terms of despair, it's up there with (and probably exceeds) Eternal Sunshine, The Vicious Kind, Deer Hunter, and Taxi Driver, the movie I'll talk about next.

I finally got around to seeing Taxi Driver. It's one of Robert De Niro's earlier movies. Came out in 1976. He is freggin' badass. I think his character is a Vietnam vet. Anyway, De Niro is a taxi driver in New York in the mid-70's when that city is basically hell on earth. He sees first hand the destructive force of drugs, prostitution, gangs, and lack of opportunity.

He ends up being rejected by a beautiful woman played by Cybill Shepperd. She is probably supposed to represent his rejection from society. Whatever it represents, her leaving directly impacts his loneliness. She was his only real contact with people after a year of being a taxi driver -- even while living in a huge city (the irony of living in cities is loneliness, I suppose).

You might not know it, but this movie is where the phrase

Eventually he gets pissed about his surroundings, especially how the politicians make promises they can't hold (cleaning up New York). He takes matters into his own hands and buys a whole bunch of handguns, and a huge ass knife. He starts carrying the guns and stops a crime or two, just randomly, usually by violently shooting the bad guys.

He meets this like 12 year old prostitute (no joke) played by Jodie Foster (who was 14 at the time), and it's more than he can bear. But again, I won't ruin the ending.

This movie was more violent than Johnny Got His Gun, so I didn't enjoy it as much, but it was still very very good. It dealt with concepts of loneliness, despair, and the warped "good guy" using vigilante justice. Vigilantes can be good guys, right? I mean c'mon, ever see Death Wish? (any one of the 9 billion that they made)

These movies are definitely worth seeing (not Death Wish), but I definitely recommend being in a good mood beforehand, so you don't slit your wrists during the movies -- haha.

Good day!
